Healing Migraine

I had posted a message in a public forum that I had migraine for a long time and I could cure myself of it by doing yoga asanas. Then many people started writing to me to know how I could do it. Therefore I decided to write about it here so that it serves two purposes, one is that I don't have to repeat myself every time and second is that I can provide a detailed and clearer picture.
First of all let me tell you that I am not a doctor and have received no medical training. I believe that most of the illness occurs primarily due to miss managed body-mind reasons than external reasons and there are many wonderful ways to heal yourself using traditional knowledge and common sense approach. For example some animals stop eating when they have indigestion caused by over eating.

Migraine which I had, was classified as Non-classical migraine by a qualified nuerologist and I was prescribed to take a medicine called "Clotan." Right now I would not be able to give more information about this medicine; those who are interested can look up for information from a suitable source. I did use the medicine for about 6 months; I discarded it fully once I gained confidence in my method of curing Migraine.

Though I started to do yoga asanas, which I had learnt in my childhood, there were many things which together helped me cure Migraine.
But remember one thing, this is not a push button method. If you don't wish to continue taking medcine and if instead of the doctor deciding how your body should be handled, you want to do it yourself, then you need to do a bit of homework. It is not just about twisting you hands and body in different directions. There is more to it, especially as far as Migraine is considered, including the information that the Doctors themselves have provided in various resources.
According to me there are three major things that cause migraine. (Other than family history, I will only talk about what can be changed, not about things that can't be changed: you can't change your parents lol..)

1. Disorder in your food and sleep habits.
2. Low threshold in certain pain bearing capacities. (Irritability)
3. Lack of mind-body co-ordination.

Interestingly yoga will set right all the three above conditions, generally what people know by yoga is some kind of exercise, but that is only one aspect of Yoga which are called asana. Plural is asanas.

So you might ask, will doing just the asanas set right all these problems. The answer is yes, but there are few other things that you need to take care of.
But it is only when you do it in a "proper way." And the level of your success is the level at which you do it "properly." Since I myself could cure Migraine with a combination of many things, I would be wrong if I said just the asanas cured it. So I am going to give my formula of how I cured Migraine. You could pick whatever that makes sense to you, and I encourage you to replace certain things with your own practices, and when you feel like asking questions please do reply to this article or email me at my address.

So this process is going to be a long term process: it could take 6 months to a year depending on the history of your problem and the seriousness of your practice and your determination to heal yourself, this method will work only when you decide to take charge of you body, your health and finally your life. If you give a "contract" to your doctor to heal your body you will never cure it, in that sense my advice is a “do it yourself" solution. I am not going to act the way your doctor acts, here you have to be your own doctor eventually. (Don’t be afraid because there are no drugs involved here! )

Identifying the triggers: I had the following triggers

1. Fasting (or delay in eating food)- linked to hyper acidity.
2. Journey.
3. Excitement.
4. Sudden temperature change.( Walking out of an A/C room in hot summer)
5. Cold head bath.
6. Loud sound.
7. Intense light.
8. Loss of sleep.

So if you have triggers write them down. You need to remove these triggers as much as you can. For example 1, 4, 6, 7 are not that difficult to avoid. 2, 8 may be little difficult, especially if your job requires you to do it. 3 may be very difficult. But eventually you have to work at it also if you need to be free of migraine. So grade your trigger from the most dangerous to the mild. And plan your day to avoid these triggers. I will come back to handling these triggers later.
